How can we help?

What can we do to help our children develop high aspirations for the future?
Rereading my first post on this blog (Aspirations, 2/19/14) I have to laugh at my liberal references and use of "researcher speak"! Obviously it was was an extract of my dissertation. Looking back on that post, and the research that I and others at the Educational Policy Improvement Center were doing at that time, I realize that we missed the mark in terms of translating these findings for educators, parents, and policy makers. We needed to answer one fundamental question: How can we help?
How can parents help their children transition into school as kindergarteners and into college and careers as young adults? How can educators help students learn the skills necessary to succeed in life after high school? How can school administrators and policy makers support these efforts? How can we as a society help create the systems that will sustain our citizenry in the future?
I plan to use this blog to explore these questions and others. I hope to translate research findings into useful tips that can be used to help all students meet their greatest aspirations. Stay tuned!
